Driving Sustainable Energy Leadership with Engineering Excellence
Mr. Susobhan Patra is a distinguished power sector professional whose career reflects technical depth, steady leadership, and a strong commitment to sustainability. An alumnus of Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith, Purulia, and Ramakrishna Mission Residential College, Narendrapur, he went on to earn a Master’s degree in Applied Physics from the University of Calcutta, laying a strong academic foundation for a career in the energy industry.
He began his professional journey as a Graduate Engineer Trainee with the Andrew Yule Group before joining CESC Limited as a Shift Charge Engineer. Over the past twenty five years, Mr. Patra has grown through multiple operational and leadership roles across CESC Limited’s generating stations, gaining extensive experience in plant operations, maintenance, performance optimization, and team leadership.
Currently serving as Vice President and Plant Head of Haldia Energy Limited, a 600 MW thermal power plant in Haldia, West Bengal, Mr. Patra plays a pivotal role in ensuring operational efficiency, reliability, and sustainable growth. His expertise in plant upgradation, digitisation, and adoption of innovative engineering solutions has strengthened performance benchmarks and enhanced overall plant productivity. In recognition of his technical excellence and leadership contribution, he was honoured with the Top Gear Best Engineer Award of the RP Sanjiv Goenka Group. He is a Certified Boiler Operating Engineer and has also completed a certification programme at SOIL under ELBP.
Beyond plant operations, Mr. Patra remains deeply engaged with academic and industry institutions. He serves as an Executive Committee Member of NSCI West Bengal Chapter and as Co Chairperson of the BCCI Haldia Chapter. He is also a Member of the Board of Studies at Haldia Institute of Technology and regularly contributes as a visiting faculty at Haldia Institute of Technology, AIPM, and Ramakrishna Mission Belgharia Shilpapith. As a panellist, he frequently shares insights on sustainability, safety, fire safety, and related domains, encouraging dialogue between industry and academia.
A strong advocate of environmental stewardship, Mr. Patra oversees the Environment Management and Corporate Social Responsibility functions at Haldia Energy Limited. Under his strategic leadership, the plant has developed green building infrastructure, undertaken plantation of more than one and a half lakh trees within the premises, and implemented multiple initiatives focused on environmental protection and biodiversity conservation, including significant mangrove conservation efforts.
On the social development front, his guidance has shaped impactful CSR programmes centred on healthcare, education, and livelihood development. Particular emphasis has been placed on empowering underprivileged women in rural communities, enabling sustainable income opportunities and long term community resilience. These efforts have generated measurable social impact while reinforcing the company’s commitment to inclusive growth.
