Arogya Sadan Bringing Hope and Healing to Children with Thalassemia
In India, thousands of children living with thalassemia require regular blood transfusions, continuous medical supervision, and long term care. For families from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, accessing specialized treatment in metropolitan cities like Mumbai often becomes an overwhelming challenge. Recognizing this critical gap, Child Help Foundation established Arogya Sadan in Borivali, Mumbai, as a compassionate intervention designed to support pediatric thalassemia patients and their families during their treatment journey.
Founded in 2010 under the Bombay Public Trust Act, Child Help Foundation works across India to advance sustainable development goals related to health, education, and poverty alleviation. Arogya Sadan reflects this commitment by offering a holistic care ecosystem that goes beyond medical assistance to address the emotional, social, and logistical challenges faced by families dealing with chronic illness.
Arogya Sadan provides free temporary accommodation for up to 200 days, with extensions based on medical needs. Families traveling from distant regions are offered clean, secure, and child friendly living spaces where the patient, parents, and in some cases a sibling or donor can stay together. By removing the burden of high rental costs in Mumbai, the initiative allows families to focus entirely on the child’s treatment and recovery.
Nutrition is a cornerstone of care at Arogya Sadan. Children with thalassemia require carefully planned diets to maintain strength and immunity. The center provides doctor recommended meals including breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and fresh fruits, all prepared under strict hygienic conditions. This ensures that every child receives balanced nourishment without adding financial strain to the family.
Frequent hospital visits for blood transfusions and check ups are essential for managing thalassemia. To ease this process, Arogya Sadan offers reliable transportation services for medical appointments, including pick up and drop facilities. This eliminates logistical challenges and ensures timely access to treatment, which is crucial for patient outcomes.
Understanding that chronic illness affects mental well being, the center integrates psychosocial support through counseling and group activities. Recreational sessions, art and craft activities, indoor games, and storytelling create a sense of normalcy for children. Volunteers also conduct non formal educational sessions to prevent academic disruption and keep children intellectually engaged during their stay.
Hygiene and sanitation are prioritized to protect children with weakened immune systems. Regular cleaning protocols, provision of toiletries, and infection control measures help maintain a safe and healthy environment. Additionally, the foundation manages medical records efficiently and collaborates closely with local hospitals to ensure continuity of care.
Arogya Sadan is managed by a dedicated team including trustees, project managers, a warden, and support staff, with honorary medical and counseling professionals contributing as needed. Through this structured and compassionate approach, the initiative is expected to support around 70 individuals, significantly improving their quality of life and treatment experience.
By addressing medical, emotional, and practical needs under one roof, Arogya Sadan stands as a beacon of hope for children battling thalassemia. It not only provides shelter and services but restores dignity, resilience, and optimism to families navigating one of the most challenging phases of their lives.
